$150 EXEMODE DV5000UW Waterproof Camcorder

By Andrew Liszewski

Unless you make a living filming sharks or other sea life in their natural habitat, you probably can’t justify the cost of an underwater housing for your camera or camcorder. And trying to find one on the cheap is basically playing Russian Roulette with your expensive electronics. So for $150 you can pick up this relatively affordable waterproof digital camcorder from EXEMODE for those rare opportunities you actually get to shoot underwater, like on vacation or at a pool party. It’s 720P HD capable and shoots stills at 12MP so you’re not suffering with a low-res sensor, and on a single charge you can capture a decent 2 1/2 hours of video. I still don’t understand why manufacturers only include paltry amounts of on-board memory, 32MB in this case, but thankfully that’s infinitely expandable via SD cards.

Verbatim’s Leather Wallet Drive

By Andrew Liszewski

There’s no sign of them on the Verbatim website just yet, but apparently you’ll soon be able to carry hundreds of thousands of receipts and family photos in your back pocket with their new wallet drives. They’re basically just a hard drive wrapped in brown or dark brown leather (stamped with the Verbatim logo) that come with a small suite of Nero software on board, and whenever they are available you’ll be able to pick one up in 320GB or 500GB capacities. Pricing TBD.

Inovalley Hiking Watch With A Pop-up Anemometer Is A Little Much

Inovalley Anemometer & Altimeter Watch (Images courtesy BB Shopping)
By Andrew Liszewski

I understand that hardcore hiking enthusiasts can benefit from the detailed information provided by a watch with a built-in thermometer, altimeter, barometer, compass etc. but at some point you have to draw the line lest the watch ends up being an uncomfortable monstrosity. And in case you were wondering, that line can be found right before this Inovalley hiking watch, which has all of the aforementioned functionality plus a built-in, pop-up anemometer for measuring windspeeds.

Something tells me if you have the need to know the windspeed during your outdoor escapades you’re going to carry a dedicated unit that’s probably far more accurate than this one. And at ~$143 (£89.99) you can easily pick up both a decent Casio or Timex outdoors watch and a half-decent compact anemometer for the same price, and be better equipped in the long run.

Build Your Own Laser Tripwire Security System

By Chris Scott Barr

Modern security systems are great for protecting your house, but what if you have a specific valuable that you want to keep safe? Perhaps you want to setup a cool laser security system like you see in the movies. If that’s the case, you can build such a contraption rather easily following this Instructables guide.

The system uses a laser tripwire to detect whether or not someone has crossed a certain point. Once someone passes through it, a webcam will take a picture of the intruder and post it on Twitter. Now this may not get the police there in time to stop them from running off with the goods, but at least you’ll know who did it.

Adidas’ TRON: Legacy Sneakers Revealed At Comic Con UPDATE: Now With Video! Now A Heck Of A Lot Cooler!

By Andrew Liszewski

A couple of weeks ago we posted about the Adidas TRON: Legacy tie-in sneakers that were first shown at Comic Con, but lamented that while the design was suitably futuristic and TRON-like, the fact that they only had glow-in-the-dark stitching and reflective screenprints was kind of disappointing. But the video above was posted to YouTube shortly after that article went live, and it clearly shows that the sneakers do indeed light-up by themselves thanks to some sort of electroluminescent material I’m assuming. So they’re definitely a heck of a lot cooler than I originally thought, and will no doubt be in high demand among sneaker freaks.

Well now you can relive a bit of your youth and lost freedom by backing up your TPS reports and spreadsheets on this limited edition Dr. Martens USB flash drive. It’s shaped like one of their classic boots, and even though the doctor prescribed just 2GB of storage, it will set you back $25 from their online store.

Steak Station Monitors Four Steaks At Once (Or One Massive Heart Stopper)

Steak Station (Image courtesy Amazon)
By Andrew Liszewski

Never suffer through an overcooked or undercooked steak again with this Steak Station thermometer. Its biggest claim to fame is the fact that it comes with four separate probes for keeping tabs on four steaks at once, or a single massive slab of meat that covers your entire grill surface. I also like that instead of showing the internal measured temperature, the Steak Station has an easy to understand LCD display showing whether a steak is rare, medium, well done or somewhere in between. $22.50 from Amazon.

ANYWAY Spray Bottle Works At Any Angle

ANYWAY Spray Bottle (Image courtesy Michael Pritchard)
By Andrew Liszewski

I’m often as blown away by the simplest innovations as I am by the most complicated of technologies. And the ANYWAY spray bottle falls into that former category, with gusto. I know in the big picture the issue of spray bottles not working upside down or at odd angles really isn’t something worth complaining about, but deep down I’m quite happy someone has found a solution.

The problem with traditional spray bottles is that the dip tube only has a single hole at the bottom, so if the liquid levels are low and the bottom of the tube isn’t submerged, it ceases to function. But the ANYWAY spray dip tube has a hydrophilic membrane (which attracts liquids) with millions of tiny holes along its length, so as long as any part of the tube is touching the liquid in the bottle, it will work properly. The best part of this innovation is that it doesn’t require a complete redesign of spray bottles either, so it shouldn’t be that difficult to use the new tubes if a company decides to license the technology, and hopefully they all will!

Transform Your iPod Touch Into A Phone

By Chris Scott Barr

If you own an iPod Touch, I’m sure there’s been a time or two that you’ve wished it were an iPhone. Unfortunately transforming the device into one means finding a buyer for the iPod Touch, then signing up for a new 2-year agreement with AT&T. If only there were some sort of cheap Chinese gadget that could add phone functionality to it. Apparently there is.

A company called Yosion has crafted an iPod Touch case that, when combined with a regular SIM card, allows your device to operate as a normal phone. This includes placing/receiving calls and sending/receiving text messages. No, it won’t be exactly like having an iPhone, but it will still do the job. You’ll also get a secondary battery that’s going provide up to 4.5 hours of talk time. For between $45 and $75, it could be an interesting buy.
