Chevy Volt Inches Closer To Production

FirstVoltAssembly-thumb-550

By Evan Ackerman

Remember back in 2007 when the Chevy Volt was just a wicked looking concept car with the same sort of “sure, we’re going to be producing this in the next 3-5 years” dreams as many other concepts? There have been some changes along the way, certainly, but there are now Volts coming off the assembly lines at GM factories. These particular cars are called “pre-production” since they’ll be tested to make sure the production process is up to snuff, but for all practical purposes, GM is actually producing Volts now, and I for one am impressed.

It remains to be seen, I suppose, whether or not I will remain impressed when GM announces the final pricing for the Volt, which I’m guessing will be a little bit too close to $40,000. They seem to be on track for a late 2010 commercial release, and hopefully production will be such that the non rich and famous like you will be able to buy one in a dealership by early 2011. Me, I’m famous (I write for OhGizmo), so I’m pretty sure they’ll be sending me one for free.

Right?

Set Your Mouse Upon A Mat Crafted From Solid Steel

P2220291

By Chris Scott Barr

For most people, a mouse pad is simply a piece of fabric that your mouse sits on. Sure, it might have a picture of kittens or flowers on it, but one is just as good as the next. Others like to make a statement by having something out of the ordinary to set their mouse upon. For those people, I give you the Greenspads.

These are (to my knowledge) the only mousepads to be hand-crafted from solid steel. That’s right, someone actually makes each individual one by hand. The finishing process is said to craft the perfect surface for laser mice. They have a variety of different shapes and sizes (each hefty enough to be used as a real-life weapon if needed), though I highly recommend the Ravenholm. If you’ve ever been to Ravenholm, then you’ll appreciate the design. Prices range from $35-$50 for the available models. You can also contact them for custom work if you don’t see something that suits your fancy.

iDuck Wireless Speaker

By Andrew Liszewski

Forget just squeaking. While the iDuck might not be as squeezable as its traditional rubber counterparts, it lets you listen to music from your iPod, iPhone, or any other audio device with a headphone jack while you’re in the tub. It’s powered by a hefty 7 x AAA batteries, 4 for the duck and 4 for the egg-shaped FM transmitter, and while you’ll still want to keep your media player as far from the tub as possible, the iDuck is completely waterproof. ~$43 from BB Trade Sales.

GYST Transition Bags And Packs Provide A Clean Place To Stand And Change

GYST Transition Bags (Images courtesy GYST)
By Andrew Liszewski

While probably not needed by most people every day, GYST’s new line of bags and backpacks feature a special fold-out ‘changing compartment’ which essentially provides a clean place to stand if you’re trying to change someplace where you don’t want your feet touching the ground. Be it sand, snow, mud or even concrete. When opened the underside of the bag is completely waterproof too, so it’s designed to lay on the ground without getting completely soaked or dirty. And there’s even a separate storage compartment designed to hold wet or soiled gear without getting the other compartments mucked up.

At the moment there are 4 styles to choose from including a messenger bag ($93) a duffel bag ($104) and 2 different backpacks ($104 or $166) but since their online store isn’t up yet you’ll have to contact the company via email if you’re interested in buying one.

$52,000 Garia Edition Soleil de Minuit Golf Car Is No April Fool’s Day Prank

By Andrew Liszewski

To be fair, the base version of this golf car (not cart) actually starts at $17,499, but with a name like the Garia Edition Soleil de Minuit, it’s clearly being targeted at those who don’t mind springing for the luxurious upgrades like a built-in fridge or a custom paint job. Standard amenities include a carbon fiber roof and two-colored hand-stitched luxury seats, but there’s plenty of other features, and connections to the world of performance vehicles, for you to brag about while out on the links.

The Garia Golf Car – the ultimate European luxury golf car. Made at the same factory as the Porsche Cayman and the Porsche Boxster, The Garia is the ulti¬mate European luxury golf car.

Built to the highest standards of the automotive industry The Garia features a double wishbone front suspension similar to those found in sports cars and inspired by Formula 1 cars. The drive train is built by an Italian company that also produces Ducati gearboxes, and the aluminum profiles in the frame are made by the same company that supplies aluminum profiles to Aston Martin, Jaguar and Volvo.

The Garia Edition Soleil de Minuit golf car will be officially unveiled at the Top Marques luxury show in Monaco in April.

RC Despe EC280MG Excavator Is The Perfect Beach Accessory

By Andrew Liszewski

There’s a certain appeal to building sand castles, but nobody visits the beach to work! So the next time you head out for a little sun and sand, I suggest bringing along this remote control excavator for doing all the hard work. The EC280MG is a 1:14.5 scale version of a real excavator produced by Despe in Italy, but don’t let its size deceive you, this is one impressive RC toy.

Made from CNC cut steel the EC280MG weighs in at around 62 pounds, is powered by 6 motors running off of 4 x 7.2V Ni-MH rechargeable batteries and even features a powder coat paint job. While not very exciting, the video I’ve included below does show how strong the excavator really is, but with a price tag of $4,500, not including the required 8-channel proportional remote, it better be more capable than your average plastic RC construction toy!

iCade Turns Your iPad Into A Mini Arcade Machine

iCade

By Chris Scott Barr

I’ve not really been too excited about the iPad, for reasons that I’m not even going to bother listing here. I figure it’s easier to list reasons why I would want to get one of those for myself. So easy in fact, that I only have to name one thing. The iCade.

The iCade is an arcade cabinet accessory for your iPad. Just slide it in, fire up the iCade app and start playing one of the included classic games. There are hundreds to choose from like Dig Dug, Donkey Kong and QBERT. The accessory uses your iPad as the screen, while giving you a joystick and a pair of buttons. You even have the option of selecting one or two players. $150 is a bit salty for an accessory, but would be well worth it.

Premium HDMI Cables: More Of A Ripoff Than You Think

cables_sm

By Evan Ackerman

A couple years ago, we posted about some self-described “audiophiles” who pitted premium Monster Cables against soldered coat hangers to see if there was any audible difference. And shockingly, shockingly, there wasn’t. Those cables were analog, and in the world of digital signals, cables should make even less of a difference, but that hasn’t stopped companies from betting that people are rich and dumb and trying sell you on them. After the jump, check out the rest of the above graphic, which makes it perfectly clear that you only buy expensive HDMI cables if you hate starving children. Read the rest of this entry »

BunBun Eco Light Lets You Twirl Instead Of Cranking To Charge Your Flashlight

BunBun Eco Light (Image courtesy Landport)
By Andrew Liszewski

I’ve no problem with the eco-friendly idea behind those flashlights you either crank or shake to charge, but in practice I find them impossibly annoying. I mean who wants to be stranded in the woods with their arms so tired from charging their flashlight that they can’t even punch a bear? The BunBun Eco Light however, now that’s a different story.

To charge the flashlight you extend and twirl the handle, so not only does the action let you build up a little momentum to make things a bit easier, but it also lets you re-enact your childhood fantasies of being everyone’s favorite ninja turtle, Michelangelo. (Possibly even fighting off a bear in the process.) 30 seconds of costume-less ninja turtle cosplay should give you about 5 minutes of light from the BunBun’s 3 LEDs, and it’s expected to be available sometime in April in pink, green, purple or black for about $22.
