Workaholic Pillow Is The Only Textbook You’ll Really Need For Higher Learning

Workaholic Pillow Book (Images courtesy Geek Stuff 4 U)
By Andrew Liszewski

Don’t let those long lists of ‘required reading’ they hand out at the beginning of a semester fool you, this is the only textbook you’ll really need if you’ve decided to pursue higher learning. Available for about $62 from Geek Stuff 4 U the book opens to reveal a comfy cushion that’s sure to get you through those long nights of studying. Of course it won’t guarantee you an ‘A’ on your exams, or probably even a passing grade, but at least you’ll be well rested in the morning.

Oxyfit Personal Oxygen Booster

By Andrew Liszewski

Even those with the most rudimentary understanding of biology knows that humans need oxygen to live, but are you getting enough? According to the Japan Trend Shop, our atmosphere is about 20% oxygen, but due to environmental or health conditions your body might not be getting an adequate supply. So what can you do to remedy this? How about dropping $2,681 on the Oxyfit system which is a rechargeable battery-powered device that will boost your available oxygen from 20% to 30% via a couple of awkwardly worn hoses pointed towards your nose and mouth.

Besides the cost, another downside to the Oxyfit is that it appears to be large enough (3.3 pounds) to warrant a backpack harness accessory in order to easily carry it around, but on the plus side it doesn’t appear to need anything besides the occasional recharge to keep it producing a fresh supply of delicious O2.

A Giga Pudding Is A Lot Of Pudding

By Evan Ackerman

Giga Pudding comes in vanilla, chocolate, or strawberry, and all you have to do is add boiling water and refrigerate. The video, however, is a bit misleading since the “giga” prefix means “billion” and the pudding in the ad is nowhere near large enough. Must be some kind of demo thing. So let’s see: if one pudding equals one of those Jello snack cups, which seems entirely reasonable, a Giga Pudding would end up weighing about 125,000 tons.

This is a lot of pudding.

I would like to attempt to explain to you just how much pudding a Giga Pudding is through a useless (but entertaining!) thought experiment.

ZephyrEye Real-Life HUD For Capture The Flag Or Paintball

ZephyrEye (Images courtesy Brad Nelson)
By Andrew Liszewski

Brad Nelson, aka my hero for the day, created this amazing homebrew HUD system that provides pretty much all the functionality you’d find in a first-person shooter video game, but for real-life games of capture the flag or paintball. Thanks to a GPS and XBee RF module, as well as a small LCD display, each ZephyrEye unit allows a player to not only see the boundaries of the game field including base stations and flag locations, but also the other players, the direction each one is headed and whether they’re friend or foe. It even includes a microphone which is used to keep track of your ammo count in real-time. Most impressive!

Like in a video game, different gameplay scenarios and settings can be chosen via a basic menu system, like whether to show or hide enemy players, or to facilitate ‘re-spawn’ zones for players who’ve been ‘killed’, and a basic menu-based messaging system allows team leaders to direct their players or send general instructions. I’m not sure if Brad plans to mass produce or sell these units, but so far he’s posted a pretty detailed build history on his blog, including links to the source code if you’re interested in building your own.

Arizona School Bus Gives Free Wi-Fi To Students

bus

By Chris Scott Barr

You know how your parents and grandparents always told you how much better you had it than they did as kids? I’m still in my 20′s and I’m already thinking those exact same things. For instance, when I rode the bus to school I generally just read books. Eventually I got a portable CD player which would drown out the noise while I read. What do some kids do now? They get on their laptops and surf the net thanks to the 3G Wi-Fi router installed on the bus.

Alright, so that isn’t exactly the norm, only one bus out in Arizona has this convenience. The idea was to transform the hour-long bus ride into more-or-less of a study hall. The 3G router has been in place since last fall and the driver said that the it has made a huge impact on the students. Instead of the usual rowdy school bus activities that you generally see, most kids are simply typing away on their laptops. Sure, plenty of the kids are probably on Facebook or playing games, but it doesn’t upset the district officials. They’re just happy that it keeps them quiet. Not to mention there are students actually using it to get their homework done before getting dropped off.

Stackable Water Bottle Concept Seems Too Obvious

Stackable Water Bottle Concept (Image courtesy Yanko Design)
By Andrew Liszewski

Is there some obvious downside to this stackable water bottle concept that I’m missing? Because I’m wondering why these bottles weren’t designed like this in the first place? Created by Yujin Kim, the 5-gallon bottles have an indent on the underside allowing them to be easily stacked on top of each other, freeing up space in your office. And when placed inverted into a water cooler, the indent can also be used as a flower vase, so you know, it’s got that going for it too.

Philips Portable DVD Player Becomes Slightly More Relevant Again With The Inclusion Of A Digital TV Tuner

Philips Portable DVD Player With Digital TV Tuner (Image courtesy Philips)
By Andrew Liszewski

It’s kind of hard to justify the cost of a portable DVD player these days when a similarly priced device like the iPod Touch does so much more, but the Philips PET729 manages to make itself slightly more useful with the inclusion of a digital TV tuner and antenna. For about $120 you get a 7 inch TFT LCD display (480×234 pixel resolution) and support for almost every type of media disk including DVD, CD and SVCD, though the most ‘exotic’ file format it can handle is MP3s, so if you’re hoping to use this for watching downloaded video content, you’re out of luck. The rechargeable battery is good for about 3 hours of TV or DVD enjoyment, and should you find the ATSC reception lacking, you do have the option of hooking up a larger rooftop or outside antenna for a better picture.

Mr. Potato Head: Iron Man Edition

Mr. Potato Head: Iron Man Edition (Image courtesy COOL TOY REVIEW)
By Andrew Liszewski

For the longest time Mr. Potato Head was content to be nothing more than your run-of-the-mill potato with cartoon facial features, but in recent years it seems he’s gotten a bit restless, venturing out into different careers including an adventurous archeologist and even an alien transforming robot. But this year he’s trying his hand at being a superhero again, with this Iron Man getup which seems perfectly timed to coincide with that upcoming Iron Man movie sequel hitting theaters soon. What are the odds? The new version of Mr. Potato Head was just revealed at Toy Fair, so I don’t have details on when he’ll be available, but it’s safe to assume he’ll be priced similar to past versions.

CodeAct Greditor Pro GR100 Video Editing Keyboard

CodeAct Greditor Pro GR100 Video Editing Keyboard (Image courtesy Geek Stuff 4 U)
By Andrew Liszewski

Technically any keyboard can be used for video editing if you’re handy with shortcuts, but the Greditor GR100 from CodeAct makes it slightly easier with a built-in jog/shuttle wheel and dedicated editing buttons to the right of the numeric keypad. The additional controls are compatible with popular video editing software like Adobe’s Premiere, and in theory since it can be configured via software, you should be able to use them with any app you choose. Just keep in mind that since it’s from a Korean manufacturer there could be a language barrier with the configuration software. ~$270 from Geek Stuff 4 U.
