You could do up high shots without having to be on a ladder. The possibilities open up with this setup. I like the fact that the separate piece has controls on it. But like you said, if you don't have it setup in a rig, it's kind of pointless...actually the whole add on would be. Why see it far away if you can't do anything about changing it, other than manually walking over to the camera and changing it, might as well just stay with the camera.
