Surprise Mugs, For Subtle Office Pranks

Surprise-Mugs

By Chris Scott Barr

Being the awesome internet sensation that I am, I don’t work in an office like many of you likely do. I’m rather thankful for this, as it means I don’t have to deal with annoying people all day. Of course, it does limit the amount of inter-office pranks that I can pull. Here is a wonderfully subtle one that I would love to use on someone.

I have worked in offices before, and some people tend to assume that all coffee mugs are community cups. In fact, they usually belong to someone that gets frustrated when theirs turns up missing. Well if you’re one of these people, just purchase a Surprise Mug and leave it near the coffee pot. The Surprise Mug looks like a nondescript white mug. However, on the bottom is a cute little message that either says “I’m a twat” or “office bitch”. Even if it doesn’t stop the person from using your stuff, it’ll be $8 well spent.

Announcing The BuckyBalls Winners

By David Ponce

It’s been long enough since we launched our BuckyBalls Giveaway, and 233 comments later, we have our three winners. First up, BigDanHall, who has a vasectomy coming up in two weeks. Ouch, we feel your pain!

Then there’s Hubbles, who pasted an ASCII image of Obama. Relevance to this contest? None, of course. But it was fun to get the first ever ASCII Obama comment on OhGizmo.

Finally, JoelCampbell who refered to me as “General Secretary of OhGizmo”. Kind of has a nice ring to it.

But here’s the twist. I’m giving away two more sets to our two most loyal commenters on the site: “McMan and Blairf Felgenheimer”. If it wasn’t for you two guys, the site would be a whole lot quieter. Yes, there are other loyal commenters, and I want to thank you. These two are something else though. In the coming weeks we’re going to be ramping up our efforts to get more of our 14,000 daily visitors and our 17,000 RSS subscribers to actually engage in conversation, so stay tuned.

Nissan Teaches Cute Little RoboCars To School Like Fish

eporo

By Evan Ackerman

You ever notice how fish never, ever find themselves stuck in traffic jams? It’s frustrating, isn’t it? You’re stuck on the highway behind some yahoo in a 1994 Volvo 940 turbo wagon driving 3 miles an hour, and over there are a bunch of fish just crusin’ along at full speed. You might think it’s because fish can take advantage of a highway that’s about 1.347 billion cubic kilometers in volume, but you’d be wrong… It’s because they know how to school.

Nissan (according to their website, they make computers) is exploring how fish avoid traffic jams so successfully…

Yamaha TSX-W80 Alarm Clock With Wireless iPod Cradle

By Andrew Liszewski

I like the idea of an alarm clock with an iPod dock allowing you to listen to your own music in the morning, instead of what the local radio stations play. But I don’t like the idea
of my iPod or iPhone having to stay perched on my dresser all night long. That’s not an issue with the Yamaha TSX-W80 alarm clock though since your iPod or iPhone sits in a portable cradle that uses the company’s AirWired technology to wirelessly transmit your tunes to the alarm. And besides a design that borders on retro, the TSX-W80 is pretty basic with an FM tuner, digital clock with alarms, remote control and 2.1 speakers. It’s expected to be available sometime in December, but pricing info hasn’t been announced.

Kingston MobileLiteG2 Tiny Flash Card Reader

Kingston Digital MobileLite Generation Two (Image courtesy Kingston)
By Andrew Liszewski

Today Kingston Digital announced a new flash card reader called the MobileLiteG2, or Second Generation, that’s pretty much as small as you can get while still supporting formats like SD and Memory Stick. Of course you won’t be jamming a compact flash card in there, but their popularity continues to dwindle anyways. And as small as it is, the G2 still manages to squeeze in retractable covers to protect both the USB port and connected flash cards, and it’s got a tiny matching MSRP of just $11.

Philippe Starck Partners With LaCie To Design Line Of Hard Drives

lacie-starck-drives

By David Ponce

We’ve written about Philippe Stark a few times before. He’s an influential French industrial designer who’s gotten involved in the design of an endless stream of consumer products from juicers, to teddy bears and now hard drives. Partnering up with LaCie, he’s helped develop these drives with an interesting design. The desktop drives have a customizable touch-sensitive surface allowing you to launch preselected applications based on how you touch them. They comes in 1TB or 2TB sizes ($129 or $249) , and also feature the Starck Signature LED (a “+” sign, since the man likes to spell his name S+arck) which glows green or orange based on activity. There are also portable versions of these drives in sizes 320-500GB, with prices starting at $99.

First USB 3.0 External SSD Drives Announced

Aviator312

By Chris Scott Barr

USB 3.0 is going to likely start showing up in new computers sometime next year, which means that we’ll be seeing USB 3.0 peripherals sometime in the near future. Since the main advantage of this new specification is obviously speed, hard drives will be one of the biggest things to take advantage of it. Since SSD’s are the fastest when it comes to transfer speeds, it’s only natural that some of the first devices to be announced are external SSD drives.

Active Media Productions has announced their new USB 3.0 SSD drives which range in sizes from 16GB to 64GB. This would essentially be the same speeds you would achieve with eSATA, only without the need for an external power source. These new Aviator 312 drives will be rather small in size, measuring only 3” long and 0.2” thick. Expect to pay a premium for the new technology, as prices will range from $89 to $209.

Is $55,500 Too Much To Pay For A Mini Hummer H3 Golf Cart?

The Royal Cart (Image courtesy Bad Ass Golf Carts)
By Andrew Liszewski

Designed and custom built by a company called Bad Ass Golf Carts this miniature Hummer H3 known as The Royal Cart was created for a client who intends to use it on their own private island, which is a good thing since I can’t imagine too many golf courses being thrilled with the idea of this thing roaming their greens. It actually cost $55,500 to build and includes a long list of features that will probably leave you shaking your head.

This cart has BY FAR the best sound system ever installed on a golf cart. Pioneer AVH-P6000 DVD player with 7” touch screen display, 7” visor monitors (2 pcs.) and 7” headrest monitors (2 pcs.), Image Dynamics IDQ10D2V3 (12” subwoofers, 2 pcs: 1 piece mounted under hood in enclosure of fiberglass, 1 piece mounted in a custom box behind front seats), Image Dynamics Q700.2 Amps (2 pieces) AND Image Dynamics Q1200.1 Amplifier (1 piece) mounted in a custom box behind front seats, Dynaudio Esotec System 220V (3 component sets), 5 TV’s, Full Security system, Remote opening hood, Remote Stereo controls, and remote Strobe light control. 4 Extra Batteries AND charger to power Stereo and lights…

Kindle Goes International, Gets Price Cut

kindle-2

By Chris Scott Barr

eReaders are getting more common all the time. It seems like a new one is getting released every month or so. However, despite all of the ones on the market, the most well-known has to be the Amazon Kindle. Is it the best? Maybe not, but it’s no doubt what comes to mind when most people think of eBook readers. Well it seems that not only is a new Kindle is on the way, but they’ve decided to drop the price on the Kindle 2.

The Kindle 2 has now dropped in price by $40, bringing it to $259. I really think that the $199 price point is going to be the sweet spot. As for the newest member of the Kindle family, it really isn’t anything to write home about. It’s essentially the same Kindle 2 that we’ve grown to know and love, but with an international SIM card from AT&T. This will allow you to download books from over 100 countries and territories. This new international version will set you back $279 when it ships on October 19th.
