Sofa-Dress Makes Uncomfortable Chairs Slightly Less Uncomfortable

Sofa-Dress (Images courtesy Studio MAEZM)
By Andrew Liszewski

Created by design studio MAEZM (whose website appears to be over its allocated traffic limit) the Sofa-Dress is essentially a foam cover designed to sit atop a horribly uncomfortable wooden or metal chair, making the sitting experience feel slightly less uncomfortable. It’s a clever idea, and with some more substantial foam or padding it could actually bring relief to thousands of school kids or press conference attendees all over the world.

MaruBot Table Soccer Uses RC Robots Instead Of Plastic Men Impaled On Steel Rods

MaruBot Football League (Image courtesy IRRobot)
By Andrew Liszewski

While this MaruBot Football League game is probably going to be referred to as a “modern take on foosball” they’re really two different beasts. Instead of plastic players being spun on sliding rods, MaruBot uses 4 robots, 2 per team, that are controlled by individual joysticks manned by 4 different players. Of course the goal of each game is exactly the same, to get the ball into the net, but MaruBot requires different different teamwork and gameplay strategies than foosball does. For the moment it appears to be only available in Korea, so here’s to hoping it makes its way to North America one day.

SGI Unveils Their New Octane III Personal Supercomputer

Octane III Personal Supercomputer (Images courtesy SGI)
By Andrew Liszewski

While SGI will probably never be remembered for their business prowess, there’s no denying they had some nice hardware back in the day. But it looks like the company is back at it with their new Octane III Personal Supercomputer announced yesterday. With a one-by-two-foot form factor and a wall of fans you probably don’t want this thing sitting on your desk, but if you need the computing horsepower you won’t be disappointed to hear that the Octane III can accommodate up to 80-high performance cores and almost 1TB of memory. The system will be available in a wide variety of CPU configurations, and here’s just a few to give you an idea of what kind of processing power we’re talking about:

- Ten dual-socket, Quad-Core Intel® Xeon® processor 5500 series-based nodes
- One dual-socket, Quad-Core Intel® Xeon® processor 5500 series-based workstation with advanced NVIDIA graphics and/or GP-GPU card support
- Nineteen single-socket, Quad-Core Intel® Xeon® processor 3400 series-based nodes
- Nineteen single-socket, Dual-Core Intel® Atom™ processor-based nodes

The Octane III is available now with Intel Xeon processor 5500 series or Intel Atom configurations and a starting price of $7,995.

Toshiba Announces Transforming USB Mice And Flash Drives

transformersusb

By Chris Scott Barr

In case you weren’t aware, the Transformers franchise is celebrating its 25th anniversary this year. To commemorate the anniversary, Toshiba is releasing a new line of mice and USB flash drives. As you would imagine, there is more than meets the eye with each one. All will be fully transformable, and will set you back $50 each. Kids and huge fans of the series might enjoy them, but $50 is a bit much methinks. They haven’t released a lot of details, such as the capacity of the USB drives, though we do know these will be out before the holiday season.

Google To Make Published Google Docs Pages Searchable

google_apps

By Chris Scott Barr

Here’s a short and sweet little tidbit from the land of Google. It seems that the search giant is now going to begin indexing documents shared within Google Docs.

Now before you freak out, this doesn’t mean that everyone’s private documents will be searchable. Rather, only those documents which you have expressly made public by using the “publish as web page” option will be indexed. Just one more reason why Google is awesome.

DFI Creates Hybrid Motherboard

By Chris Scott Barr

I’m sure that I’m not the only one that has more than one computer at his desk. However, I doubt very much that many people have multiple computers inside a single case (I know I don’t). Well the people at DFI have created a new motherboard which allows for two completely different systems to be ran off of it. The above video goes into greater detail, but essentially you have a P45 chipset running a socket 775 CPU, and an Atom-based configuration on the board. There are shared ports between the two, and you’ll be able to transfer files back-and-forth.

This new board is going to set you back around $399 when it hits the market in October or November of this year. The price really makes me wonder how many people are going to find many real applications for this. Personally, I’d rather have two different motherboards inside two different cases. It would be cheaper, you’d eliminate the single point of failure between two computers, and you could use both at the same time.

Sony Ericsson Announces New Motion Activated Earbuds

MH907

By Chris Scott Barr

You don’t exactly see a lot of innovation in the world of earbuds. Sure, a company might make some that sound particularly awesome, or feel a little more comfortable than others. Heck, in-line controls are probably the most advanced thing you’ll see these days. Well Sony Ericsson has created a new technology which they hope will revolutionize the way we use earbuds.

Sony Ericsson’s new MH907 earbuds allow you to control your music in a very unique way. Just pop in both buds and your music will automatically start playing. Take one (or both) out, and the song will pause. If you get a phone call, insert one of the buds to answer, and take it back out to hang up. The features only work with skin contact, so you don’t accidentally answer your phone while the earbuds are in your pocket or anything.

The MH907 earbuds are a little expensive (depending on the quality, as I’ve seen some pretty pricey high-end ones) coming in at $55 when they go on sale later this week. The biggest pitfall I see is  that you’ll need a Sony Ericsson phone with a fast port connector in order to use these.  Hit the jump for one of the craziest commercials I’ve seen in a little while, depicting these earbuds.

AT&T Starts Rolling Out 3G Microcells

3g-microcell-site

By Chris Scott Barr

Way back in January we told you that AT&T was rolling out a 3G femtocell for their customers. Of course it’s now September and we’ve hardly heard another word about it. I’ve been anxiously awaiting its release, as I get almost no signal in my house. I’d like to ditch my home phone, but with the unreliable service, I can’t justify it. Thankfully, it seems as though the mobile giant is finally rolling out these devices.

AT&T’s new 3G Micrcell is officially available to the general public, but only in Charlotte, NC. For those in the area, they can purchase the device for $150. There is no monthly fee, however, you will still use your minutes while making calls if you don’t already have landline or DSL service with AT&T. If you have neither and want unlimited calls, you can pay $20 a month (and get a $100 rebate on the hardware).

I’d like to say something about why you shouldn’t need one of these, but in all honesty, there are some places where it’s just not possible to get signal. I live in a rather large town, and I have full 3G signal everywhere except in the small valley where I live. Short of putting in a new tower in the valley itself (which wouldn’t affect enough people to justify the cost) I’ll never get better reception. I’d be ecstatic to get one of these and drop my monthly home phone bill. If you’re listening AT&T, lets go ahead and start rolling these out in Indiana ASAP.

Ion Audio Discover DJ System

Ion Audio Dsicover DJ (Image courtesy Ion Audio)
By Andrew Liszewski

The upcoming DJ Hero game looks like a lot of fun, but unlike Rock Band where you can actually learn to play the drums, no one’s pretending a high score will earn you a DJ’ing career at your local clubs. The Discover DJ system from Ion Audio also isn’t a guaranteed ticket to DJ super stardom, but it looks like a cheaper way to see if you’ve got the mixing and scratchin’ chops before you drop the cash on a couple of real 1200s.

The faux turntables feature a couple of natural-feeling ‘scratch’ wheels (though smaller than the real thing) as well as the mandatory cross-fader, bass & treble dials and pitch controls. It connects to your PC via USB and includes the MixVibes DJ software which allows you to scratch and mix with any song in your iTunes library. Pricing and availability to be announced.
