AT&T Windows Mobile Users To Get Free WiFi, Finally

att-logo

By Chris Scott Barr

If you happen to have an iPhone, or a Blackberry on AT&T”s network, then you get free WiFi at any AT&T hotspot. That can be rather convenient at times, as WiFi is generally faster than the 3G speeds you would get otherwise. Of course if you’re using any other smartphone, the wireless giant still asks you to pay extra if you want to use one of their hotspots. Thankfully, they seem to have come around.

As of September 14th, all users with a Windows Mobile smartphone (and an accompanying data plan) will be able to get in on the free wireless access. It’s only taken them how long to wake up and offer this?

MacTable Lowers Your iMac Screen For No Good Reason

500x_mactable

By Chris Scott Barr

I’ll admit to being a Mac user, but I’m an equal-opportunity geek, so I have several Windows machines as well. Mac users tend to get a reputation for needing things that are trendy and fashionable to go with their computers. That’s not the case with any of the people I know, but companies like SmartDesks aren’t helping matters by releasing products like the MacTable.

Here is a table specially designed for iMacs (though thankfully the table is compatible with Windows PCs), which basically means there’s a hole in it. The hole is the perfect size to hold an iMac, so that the bottom of the screen is flush with the table. Brilliant, now you’ve taken something that’s perfectly eye-level and dropped it by around 6 inches or so. I’ve used stations where you had to stare down at the computer the entire time, and they are not comfortable at all. I’m sure that some hip school will buy these and all of their kids will complain of neck pains. Awesome.

iHat Features Built-In Speakers

iHat (Image courtesy BB Shopping)
By Andrew Liszewski

As far as I’m concerned Summer is all but over, particularly since recent temperatures have had me reaching for a light jacket when I head in to work in the morning. So there’s no time like the present to start looking into clothing for the Fall & Winter. Like the iHat, which is a brimless cap (or ‘toque’ as I’d call it) featuring a speaker over each ear and an audio cable allowing it to be plugged into any audio device featuring a standard headphone jack. I’m sure the sound isn’t amazing, but if you’re hitting the slopes why risk your expensive earbuds or headphones when the iHat is just $25 from BB Shopping, available December 14.

Is This A Shot Of The iRiver Story eBook Reader?

iRiver Story (Image courtesy MobileRead Forums)
By Andrew Liszewski

With a Canadian version of the Kindle still nowhere in sight, I’m now in my second year of trying to find an eBook reader I might be content with. And it looks like I might have yet another contender. A series of photos have been posted to the MobileRead Forums that are claimed to be the rumored iRiver eBook reader called the ‘Story’. It hasn’t officially been announced, but the 6-inch reader will supposedly include a full QWERTY keyboard, SD card slot, comic book viewer, support for PDF, epub, txt, doc files and other popular book formats and will supposedly go on sale as early as September 16th for around $300.

At launch, books and other content will be available to the Story thanks to an affiliation with Kyobo, the largest bookstore chain in Korea, but iRiver is also working on making content available from US, Russian, European and Australian booksellers, which probably means that September 16th launch date won’t include North America.

Nintendo Announces Black Wiimote Bundle

Black Wiimote Bundle (Image courtesy Nintendo)
By Andrew Liszewski

Throughout their lifespans the Nintendo 64 and the Gamecube came in a variety of different colors, and if I remember correctly, the Cube was even available in black or purple right at launch. But the Wii has been a different story. Since it launched everyone has had to settle for a white console, though that limitation clearly hasn’t had much impact on its sales. But there is hope that the Wii might eventually get a splash of color.

Today Nintendo announced a black Wiimote bundle that will be available this holiday season. The bundle includes a black Wiimote, black Wii Jacket and a black version of the Wii MotionPlus dongle, but if you want a matching black Nunchuck, you’ll have to buy that separately. There’s still no black version of the Wii coming to North America mind you, but this is a step in the right direction.

iBand Is An iPhone Case That Uses Non-Newtonian Fluids

mainpic-iband_iphone-angle-thumb-450x280-23323

By David Ponce

The iBand is made from a material produced by a company called d3o, which we’ve written about before> They make a flexible polymer that falls within the category of Non-Newtonian fluids. In a nutshell, these “fluids”, um, flow under normal conditions but harden quickly upon sudden impact. Some of you may have seen that Mythbusters episode where they run around barefoot on a mixture of cornstarch and water. This product is kind of like that. Only now you can have it as armor for your iPhone. Used normally, it’s like a rubber case but if you drop it it’ll harden instantly and provide up to 134% more impact protection than most other cases.

We’re not sure about price or availability but the product page is in the links below.

Death Now Comes In The Shape Of 500hp On Two Wheels: The Millyard Viper V10

By David Ponce

This is what happens if you have a Dodge Viper V10 engine and decide to Frankenstein it into a motorbike. The creation is called a Millyard Viper V10 and is probably the bike with the longest wheelbase in the world (then again, maybe not, what do we know about bikes?). Created by one UK tinkerer called Allen Millyard, it’s supposedly street-legal and might be up for sale at some point in the future. Motorcyle News got interested and will write more about this in their August 26 and September 2 issues, so that’s all we know for now.

We’re wondering… with a total contact patch as small as that provided by a bike… is it even possible to slow this thing down safely from the speeds it can probably attain in the blink of a eye? In any case, this isn’t the first V10 powered crotch rocket we’ve written about: here’s The Chrysler Tomahawk V10 from all the way back in 2006.

Gears Of War Fanatics: Get Yourself An Imulsion Energy Drink!

gears_of_war_imulsion_drink

By David Ponce

Without getting into irrelevant social commentary, there’s a group of people out there who will buy just about anything with a logo they like on it: the hardcore fans. In this case we’re thinking there’s got to be a ripe market for Gears Of War aficionados looking to purchase themselves some Imulsion. Yeah, it comes in the shape of an energy drink, and not

“a phosphorescent, highly volatile, low-viscosity fluid originally discovered by an oil exploration drill on the planet Sera [that] will cause Locust subjects to transform into Lambent forms, making them, amongst other things, highly explosive when killed. In extreme cases, Imulsion exposure will cause the subject to mutate uncontrollably…”

Yeah, guys it’s really just some bubbly sugary over-caffeinated liquid that licensed the GoW trademark. But heck, if you really want some it’s available at Amazon for $3 a pop.
