Condition Your Kids For Space Travel With Spaceball

spaceball-space-travel-training-thumb-550x463-21825

By Chris Scott Barr

When I was a kid, we had one of those giant trampolines in our back yard. Looking back I’m almost amazed at how entertained I was by the simple act of jumping up and down for a few hours. Granted, it was more fun with two people, because then you could bounce higher. However, someone has gone and attempted to make trampolines even more fun than they already are. Not only is Spaceball supposed to be fun, apparently it’s also good conditioning for space travel.

That last statement comes from Scott Carpenter, one of NASA’s Mercury Seven astronauts. I’m guessing it probably applies to most trampolines, but I digress. Spaceball is a game played by two people (under 200lbs each) and you appear to throw a ball through a small tunnel at the other person. I’m sure it could be fun, until the ball gets knocked into the yard, which it will. Over and over. The game is pretty expensive too, ringing in at $700. Honestly, I think it might sell better if they changed the name to “Spaceballs the Trampoline Game.”

Side Note: Props to whoever did the awesome Photoshop job on those kids. Nothing says “no one wants to use our product” quite like having to paste people into the picture.

Spoticam Lamp

By Andrew Liszewski

Looking to make a statement about the ever-increasing presence of big brother, but don’t want to ruffle too many feathers? Well now you can avoid those lengthy protests or boring letters to the government expressing your concern with this Spoticam Lamp created by Antrepo Design Industry. It cleverly mashes up a security camera with a desk lamp and can either be mounted to the wall or simply left sitting on your desk. It’s supposedly available in your choice of a white finish or raw aluminum, but at this point and time I don’t think it’s actually available for sale so you won’t be able to stick it to the man just yet.

Cool.con Remote Certainly Looks Comfortable To Use

Cool.con TV Remote (Images courtesy FunShop)
By Andrew Liszewski

If ergonomics and comfort just aren’t your thing, then I highly recommend considering the Cool.con the next time you’re looking for a new TV remote. It’s got an easy to use button layout, but the real appeal is the half-sphere underside which is covered in small metal spikes. In all seriousness I think it’s supposed to be some kind of pressure-point thing to do who knows what while you’re watching TV, but there’s a good chance it will also serve to discourage someone from snatching the remote away from you and trying to change the channel. About $13 from the FunShop.

Toshiba Announces First 64GB SDXC Card

Toshiba SDXC Cards (Image courtesy Akihabara News)
By Andrew Liszewski

While flash cards with larger and larger capacities are inevitable, at one point I would have scoffed at a 64GB SD card as being completely unnecessary. But with more and more DSLRs using SD cards, getting bigger sensors and gaining the ability to capture hi-def video, a 64GB card not only makes sense, but is almost necessary. So congratulations to Toshiba who are the first to launch a 64GB SDXC card with 35MB per second write speeds and 60MB per second read speeds. The new card will also be available in 32GB and 16GB capacities (yawn!) and are set to go into production early next year.

Nintendo Mini Classics

By Andrew Liszewski

Don’t fret too much if you missed out on that complete Nintendo Game & Watch collection auction we posted last week. Not only did you save yourself 11 grand, but it turns out Nintendo has actually re-released some of the more popular G&W titles, but smaller! These Mini Classics include Mario’s Cement Factory, Donkey Kong Junior and Super Mario Bros. but are now small enough to fit on a keychain. They also include basic clock and alarm functions and have a retractable stand in the back allowing them to be used as a desktop clock if for some reason your PC/cellphone/watch have all stopped telling the time. $16 each from Firebox.com.

World’s Largest Portable LED Screen Is Also The World’s Greatest Superbowl Accessory

Iconic 100 HD (Images courtesy The ADI Group)
By Andrew Liszewski

Given the choice I would probably opt for a really great Superbowl party rather than going to the actual game, but what makes a ‘great’ Superbowl party? Well if this thing happens to pull up in front of your home on Superbowl Sunday morning, then it’s safe to say you’ll be enjoying a great party.

At 12.8 meters wide and 7.2 meters tall the Iconic 100 from The ADI Group is the largest mobile LED screen in the world, though in this case ‘mobile’ is a relative term since it folds up into a tractor trailer (the whole process takes about 24 minutes) and requires something with a little more oomph than your minivan to haul it around. It does weight 33,000kg after all. The display’s got a decent resolution of 720P, an on-board production suite for switching feeds on-the-fly and its own generator which means it won’t leave you with any nasty surprises on your power bill if you do happen to rent one for a weekend.

Panasonic Introduces 3D Washing Machine

panasonic-washing-machines

By David Ponce

This has been out since February, actually, but I can’t find any mention of it anywhere for some reason. It seems Panasonic has released for the European market three different models of washing machines that feature a special 3D sensor. Why?

As the advanced 3D sensor detects how the drum moves according to load, a variable speed control system uses that information to fine-tune motor operation. This eliminates unbalanced loads and creates an ideal three-dimensional washing effect. The result here is less stretching, less tangling and fewer wrinkles — and an altogether gentler effect on the clothes in the wash.

There’s also some talk of energy-saving, water saving and other environmentally friendly buzzwords.

It should currently be available in Belgium, France, Germany, Netherlands, Poland and the United Kingdom, followed by other parts of Europe over the course of the year.

Full press release after the jump.

Is The Halcyon Concept Car The Future?

halycon-concept_rybwx_5965

By David Ponce

We like to talk design here at OhGizmo!, so here’s some for you. The Halcyon car is a concept by designer Ralph Tayler-Webb whose looks and construction methods got our curiosity piqued. Inspired by the tranquility and silence of a glider flight over Dartmoor in south west England, Tayler-Webb embarked on a quest to design a car that would allow you to glide through landscapes rather than drive through them, seeing as the beauty and serenity of nature is often crudely broken by the sound and sight of traffic.

Turning to the owl for ideas, the Halcyon is ultra-lightweight, clean, efficient and eerily silent. It’s powered by an electric motor and it’s constructed from porous aluminum. This material is structurally similar to the bones of the owl and has the added advantage of being extremely light while maintaining sufficient rigidity and adequate sound absorption. In other words, it’s light, strong and creates a very quiet cabin.

Of course, this is only a concept. But could this be the way cars will look in a few years?

More pictures after the jump.
