Four years after the inception of the famous G-series peripherals, Logitech surprisingly hasn’t made one gaming headset, until now. The Logitech G35 is the company’s first foray in the highly competitive gaming headset market. So what makes the Logitech any different than say a pair of regular USB headsets or a pair of 8-driver cans? For starters, the Logitech G35 is powered by 2nd-generation Dolby Headphones – a glorified term coined for virtualized surround sound. Dolby Headphones 2.0 is now able to simulate 7.1-channel audio (up from 5.1) through just two drivers. It also supports Dolby Pro Logic II audio tracks (for DVD movies), and its voice morphing (which can be activated through one of the G-keys) allows you to easily mask your voice behind one of six filters.
Everything USB has recently reviewed it and has a rather mixed view on the G35 gaming headset. While the sound quality is simply breathtaking, the voice morphing is a lot of fun and the Dolby Headphone effects are actually better than the reviewer could have ever imagined for virtual surround sound, the fact that G35′s surround sound option only works with 60% of the games tested is a let down. And at a MSRP of $130, the G35 USB headset constitutes a ‘serious investment’ for any gamers. Read on for the full review which includes a comprehensive compatibility chart and a voice morphing demo.
Yesterday all the rumors finally proved to be true about a new iPhone. Apple unveiled the iPhone 3GS that will be shipping on the 19th. The device is packed with new features, one of which is the ability to be used just like a PND with turn-by-turn driving directions.
iLuv has announced new accessories for the iPhone 3GS including a windshield mount kit that holds the iPhone in place in either landscape or portrait mode. Landscape mode is perfect for using the driving direction function.
The first camcorder that I ever saw was one that my uncle had. The thing was huge and looked like something the newscasters used. It wasn’t only the huge camera though; the thing had a huge VCR that had to go along with it. It weighed about 30 pounds altogether.
Panasonic has announced a couple new camcorders today that are being called the world’s lightest camcorders at 0.5 pounds. The camcorders are the HDC-TM10 and the HDC-SD10. The only real difference between the two is that the SD10 stores video to SD and SDHC cards only. The TM10 has 8GB of internal storage and then changes to SD/SDHC cards.
I never thought I’d ever want to go back to school again, but the captains-in-training at the Warsash Maritime Academy in England have to start out on these amazing supertanker replicas before they ever get the chance to pilot the real thing. And with a price tag of over $240,000, you’re actually better off strapping a lawn chair to the RC Titanic replica I wrote about on the weekend, then trying to buy one of these for your own amusement. But replicas or not, apparently piloting these miniature supertankers can provide plenty of useful experience for the real thing, without the fear of causing the next Exxon Valdez disaster because you spent the night before your big exam partying.
While it doesn’t feature any groundbreaking innovations, I still like this StudioDesk table from Bluelounge which is specifically designed for laptop users. It’s got a clean, simple design which includes a sliding desktop surface that reveals a hidden compartment where you can hide all of your cables, power bricks and other peripherals. And so everything is still accessible, there’s an elongated slot across the width of the desk allowing syncing or charging cables to connect to the laptop sitting on top. It will set you back $599.95, but keep in mind that’s real mahogany used in the legs and other details, not particle board.
Taking a cue from Homer Simpson’s ‘speed holes’ Reebok has developed a new bat with something they call O-Technology, which is basically a set of 3 aerodynamic holes drilled into the shaft. The Vector O Bat was designed using computer models and simulations to reduce drag and increase swing speed, which in turn equals more distance on a ball or less force needed to encourage someone to pay back a loan. The Vector O Bat also features Reebok’s “Thread Locking System Connection Technology System” (that’s a direct quote, a system so nice they named it twice!) which results in an extremely stiff piece of lumber err… I mean VR950 Alloy/Composite Performance Matrix. But with a price tag of $279 it’s probably best suited to professional ball players and loan sharks.
Getting into a closed beta isn’t always the easiest of tasks. Knowing someone on the inside can help, sometimes if you’re a member of a special club you’ll get in. Many times it’s pure chance that grants you access. Well if you’re wanting to check out Uncharted 2: Among Thieves, I might just be able to help you out. I’ve got 5 beta keys for the multiplayer beta, and I’m giving them away.
If you’re interested, here’s what you’re going to need to do. Just start following OhGizmo on Twitter, and sometime in the next day or so we’ll be posting an email address on there. It’s not going to show up in the overflow on the left, so no cheating. Once you have the email address, just shoot me a message. Come next Monday I’ll pick 5 people at random who will get the keys and announce the winners. Good luck!
E3 is always full of excitement, celebrities and of course, video games. However, there has always been one other thing that catches the eyes of many gamers roaming the floor. I’m talking about the booth babes. There was a short period where such lovely ladies weren’t being allowed into the show, but this year I saw plenty of them scattered throughout the many booths. Hit the jump for a look at some of my favorites.
Over at BotJunkie, we’ve been waiting a year (a year!) for RoboGames, and this weekend, it’s all happening. Men and women, boys and girls from more than 20 countries will be competing in over 70 different events… There’s the combat (from micro-sized to 340 pound) of course, as well as the humanoid events, but I’m particularly looking forward to autonomous competitions and of course the big new event this year: Mech Warfare. We’ll be ringside, taking video. It’s gonna be AWESOME.
For up to the minute pictures and info, you can follow BotJunkie on Twitter. I’ll be Twittering from the event all weekend, and we’ll have oodles of pictures and video next week. Unless I get killed by a rampaging combat robot. Then it might take longer.
The action starts this Friday and runs though Sunday at Fort Mason in San Francisco; buy tickets here… Or if you’re poor like me and you want to get in for free, volunteers are always needed. If you’re interested in that (it’s fun!), email me (evan@botjunkie.com) and we’ll work something out.
