Dareway Segway Knock-off For Kids – This Young Lad Certainly Seems To Be Enjoying It

By Andrew Liszewski

What?! Who names a ride-on toy designed for kids the Dareway? What parent is going to read that and think this thing is safe? That’s like naming a baby rattle the RiskChoke, the name doesn’t exactly inspire confidence. On the other hand, if junior won’t stop nagging you for a Segway, this knock-off is just over $220 from MailOrderExpress.com. It doesn’t balance or anything, but the electric motor is powered by a 12V rechargeable battery and there’s a foot accelerator for going forwards and back while a thumb control is used for steering and pulling some sweet 360s.

RealD Introduces The LP, A Mobile Single-Projector 3D Solution

RealD LP (Image courtesy Engadget)
By Andrew Liszewski

RealD, the company partly responsible for making Coraline one of the better movie experiences I’ve had in a while, has just introduced a mobile 3D projection system known as the ‘LP’ designed for conference rooms, museums, virtual rides and other locations where installing a double projector system would be problematic. The RealD LP is actually the peripheral that sits in front of the projector lens, and polarizes the imagery coming from 3D-enabled projectors from companies like NEC and Christie. You’ll still need to wear a set of polarized glasses to get the 3D effect, and from what I can tell, the LP uses a linear polarizing system instead of the circular system employed in most RealD equipped theaters. So there’s the chance that turning your head could mess with the 3D effect, which is a problem that earlier 3D projection systems suffered from.

However, the compact unit means that genuine 3D projectors and display systems in the home are not that far off, and in fact the only thing stopping you from getting one of these for your living room is the unmentioned price, which probably means it’s a good idea to wait a few years.

PhotoFast Releases 1000MB/s PCIe Drive

gmonsterpromise

By Chris Scott Barr

Having a fast hard drive is always important when you’re building your next gaming rig. It doesn’t matter how fast your CPU or graphics card is, if you’re sporting an old IDE drive it’s not going to be up to snuff. Usually when one considers the fastest drives, they tend to think of SSD drives running on SATA II. However, PCIe cards are starting to crop up these days.

Not long ago we showed you the PhotoFast G-Monster PCIe SSD drive, which boasted 700MB/s read and 750MB/s write times. When compared to other SATA II drives, this seemed like a nice improvement. However, PhotoFast has already outdone themselves in just a couple of short months. Their latest drive now hits 1000MB/s read/write speeds. That’s just crazy. Almost as crazy as the $1,600 starting price for a 128GB model.

Extend Your MacBook’s Battery With The HyperMac

hypermac

By Chris Scott Barr

There’s nothing quite like running out of juice on your laptop when you’re in the middle of something very important and far from an outlet. Many road warriors will pack a spare battery for just such times. However, what if you don’t want to remove your battery (making you shut down your laptop or plug it in) or want more than just two batteries worth of use? If you’re using a MacBook of any kind, you turn to the HyperMac.

The HyperMac line of external batteries are a useful tool for any frequent traveler with a MacBook. While they might be a little larger in size than your spare battery, it does much more than just give you double the running time. First, they come in varying sizes, allowing you to run your laptop for up to 6x as long as it would with a single battery charge. Each one also comes with a USB port that can be used to charge any USB device (including your iPhone) while simultaneously powering your laptop. The HyperMac comes in four different sizes ranging from $200-$500 each.

Myst Classic Now Available On iPhone

By Evan Ackerman

This video might not mean much to you if you’ve never played Myst. But if like me you were one of the early adopters of the CD-ROM drive, this footage probably brings back a heady mix of nostalgia and frustration. Myst is now available in re-rendered (but still old school) glory for the iPhone and iPod Touch, packaged in a 700 mb download that requires a massive 1.5 gigs of free space to install. It’s been long enough since the original that I’ve reliably forgotten how to solve most of the puzzles, meaning that this is an opportunity to pay $6 for the privilege of wasting countless more hours trying to figure out how to activate the damn rocket ship.

Hands-On With The Nintendo DSi

Nintendo DSi (Image property of OhGizmo!)
By Andrew Liszewski

Nintendo sent over a DSi review unit for me to give a once over, and I’ve finally gotten around to processing and posting my photos comparing the new model to the older DS Lite. Overall it’s a solid update to the hardware, and while not revolutionary, I think it improves the DS where it counts. And the addition and potential of the DSi Shop is probably the biggest reason DS fans might want to make the upgrade. So if you’re still undecided, hit the jump for more of my photos and thoughts on the DSi. Read the rest of this entry »

Elgato EyeTV Hybrid 2009 USB TV Reviewed. Verdict: Sound Investment for Mac Owners

By Ian Chiu

Elgato – a long time Apple peripheral maker – has been making FireWire and USB TV tuners since 2002. Its EyeTV Hybrid USB TV has now received a third update, bringing Clear QAM, reportedly improved HD reception and better EPG to Mac couch potatoes. Despite being called a hybrid, the EyeTV is not a “dual” tuner, meaning you cannot watch analog and digital channel at the same time. Its software fortunately supports a second tuner if you get a EyeTV-compatible model.

Everything USB in its recent review has tried to watch two live 1080i HD streams on a 2Ghz Core Duo MacBook just fine, but ironically, switching both tuners to analog resulted in lack of USB 2.0 bandwidth error due to the uncompressed video format used by EyeTV Hybrid. The USB gadget site also praised the hardware quality; improved TV recording software; and Wi-Fi streaming capability to iPod touch & iPhone. Though, be prepared to come up with 7.5GB of HDD space for every hour of 720p HD program.

About Our Comments Situation

By David Ponce

Hey everyone. Just wanted to let you all know why anonymous comments have been temporarily disabled. As you might have noticed from this post, OhGizmo! and BotJunkie were both setting off antivirus alarms over the weekend. We’re not sure what caused the problem and are still investigating. We were able to resolve the issue by rolling back to an earlier snapshot of the site, but short of knowing what went wrong, we’re not taking any chances and are shutting down anonymous comments. Better to be safe.

We’re hoping to open’em up again soon. Until then, our apologies for taking away your God given right to have opinions and tell’em to the entire OhGizmo! readership.

By Shane McGlaun

After being on the market for a long time the Nintendo Wii is finally reaching the level of availability where you can walk into a retail store and find the console sitting on the shelves. The Wii has some great sports games like the Tiger Woods golf game that are very fun with the Wii controls.

EA has announced that it is moving the launch date of the Tiger Woods PGA Tour 10 game and the Grand Slam Tennis for the Wii to June 8. Wii fanatics may recognize June 8 as the day the Wii MotionPlus accessory is set to launch.
