Blockbuster Survey Reveals Most Popular Sci-Fi Stars

fireflytv-sb

By Shane McGlaun

I was hooked on sci-fi the first time I saw Star Wars on video when I was a kid. I missed the first two in the theaters, but I saw Return of the Jedi like 18 times in one weekend. The New Star Trek film starts this week and to celebrate Blockbuster polled sci-fi fans to find the most popular starship captain.

According to the poll, the most popular captain was Malcolm Reynolds from Firefly. Following him were James T. Kirk, Jean-Luc Picard, Han Solo, and William Adama. Seriously, Picard is a better captain than Reynolds and Kirk, and he had all those catchy phrases like “Make it So.”

Bang & Olufsen Unveils 103-inch BeoVision 4

bangbeovision103-og

By Shane McGlaun

Most of us would think that a 50 to 60-inch plasma or flat panel TV in our living rooms was big. Sure you can get larger screens, but when you get into big sizes of TVs they tend to get more expensive that most homes.

Case in point is the new Bang & Olufsen BeoVision 4 103-inch plasma TV that is currently on a three city U.S. tour. The manufacturer says that this is the only chance to see one in person because each future set will be custom built when ordered.

Olymp Ski & Snowboard Simulator

Olymp Ski & Snowboard Simulator (Images courtesy SkyTec Interactive)
By Andrew Liszewski

While Wii Fit is probably a more affordable way to simulate some skiing or snowboarding action in the off-season, I’m pretty sure it’s not the most effective way to train for a real competition. But the Olymp most definitely is. You’re not going to be squeezing one of these in your living room, since the platform is almost 23 feet wide, but it’s capable of simulating different slope characteristics and really gives you the feeling of carving your way down a mountain, whether on skis or a snowboard. In fact the pictures don’t really do the Olymp justice, so you’ll want to check out the video included below to see this thing in action. It definitely looks like a real workout.

PermaFLOW Self Cleaning Drain System

PermaFLOW (Image courtesy core77)
By Andrew Liszewski

It might not have wifi, Bluetooth or even a built-in camera, but as someone who recently spent a most unpleasant afternoon trying to remove a bowl of chili that was dumped down the drain in my kitchen, the PermaFLOW is easily the coolest gadget I’ve seen all week. It’s a replacement sink trap that improves the standard design in almost every way. First, it’s see-through, which means if the sink isn’t draining like it should, you’ll be able to see why. Secondly, its unique design and shape increases the turbulence of the water while it’s draining, which minimizes buildup. And thirdly, it’s got an easy to use knob which turns an internal wiping mechanism that should easily clear up any clog. Brilliant.

The PermaFLOW is available from PF WaterWorks in different configurations for kitchen or bathroom sinks, and ranges in price from about $40 to $50.

Duke Nukem Forever Developer Closes Its Doors

duke_nukem_forever

This post is syndicated with permission from GamerFront.net

Duke Nukem Forever has been the butt of so many jokes over the years that it’s hard to come up with something original. The game has been in development for 13 years and 3D realms has little more than a few screenshots and teasers to show for it. A solid release date has been impossible to pin down. Until now that it. The official release date is……NEVER.

No, that’s not a joke, it’s the truth. Unless a magical Duke Nukem fairy comes along and finishes the game, it isn’t happening. How do I know? Because 3D Realms has closed their doors for good. You’ll never guess why they shut down. Get this, it’s due to “funding issues.” Oh really? You’ve been working on a game for 13 years and you just realized that you’re out of money? Thankfully we have an exclusive look at the 3D Realms business plan:

Step 1: Announce a game we’ll never finish.

Step 2: ?

Step 3: Profit

Mopping Is Now As Easy As Walking To The Fridge

mops

By Chris Scott Barr

Mopping is one of those tasks that I hate doing. Luckily my place is almost completely carpeted, so I only have to worry about the kitchen and bathrooms. I can’t say what it is about the whole mop-and-bucket process that I hate, I just do. However, I have discovered a better way of doing things. Sure, those Swiffer things are pretty cool, but I’m talking about something a little more fun. I’m talking about the Walk N’ Clean Slippers.

Imaging having a pair of slippers that are actually mops on the bottom. That’s pretty much the whole idea behind these things. The bottoms are held on by velcro so that they can be easily detached and tossed in your washing machine. At $19 a pair, it sounds like a solid investment to me.

Amazon Announces The 9.7-inch Kindle DX

kindledx5

By Chris Scott Barr

I’ve been watching the Kindle for a little while now, and have been tempted to pick one up. There are a few reasons that I haven’t, one of which being the size of the screen. If I’m going to buy an e-reader, I’d like to have more than six inches worth of screen to stare at. That’s not even enough for a single page of a paperback novel. Rumors have been flying around for a few days about a new larger Kindle that is designed with textbooks and magazines in mind.

The new Kindle DX sports a whopping 9.7-inch screen, which is about as large as two full pages in a paperback book. A bigger screen isn’t the only thing the DX has to offer. An accelerometer allows you to rotate the orientation of the page by rotating the device (the same principle is used on many iPhone apps), a built-in 3G card and 3.3GB of storage are also welcome upgrades. Native PDF support is probably one of the best new features, as it eliminates the need to pay Amazon to convert the documents to their proprietary file type.

Amazon has teamed up with three of the top textbook publishers to get schoolbooks onto the Kindle. These are Pearson, Wiley and Cengage which together dominate 60% of the textbook market. This partnership has allowed them to launch trial programs at several universities which will virtually replace the need for students to carry around most of their books. Finally, they’ve struck deals to get The New York Times, The Boston Globe and The Washington Post onto your Kindle at a reduced price.

WindCube generates 60kW of rooftop power Kermit-style

windcube-sb

By Shane McGlaun

In the words of the immortal Kermit the Frog, it ain’t easy being green. In sunny climates, you can use solar panels to capture free power and in windy locations, you can make electricity using wind. The catch is that neither of those methods are all that efficient at producing electricity and they make the area where they are installed look bad.

Green Energy Technologies has announced a new wind power generator called the WindCube that is smaller than the typical wind generator and designed to sit on the roof of a building in urban and rural areas.

Star Trek Already a Hit Movie at Fandango

startrek-sb

By Shane McGlaun

If you are a movie fan, you know that the Star Trek film is set to launch this week. This should be one of the coolest films of the summer. At first, I didn’t like Sylar from Heroes as Spock, but with those crazy eyebrows, the dude makes a good Spock.

If you want to see the movie on opening weekend, you had better buy your tickets now. According to Fandango, the movie has sold out in more than 100 theater times around the country. The online ticket seller says that ticket sales for Star Trek alone make up 81% of its daily sales.
