Glass Top Pool Table

pooltable

By Evan Ackerman

“Vitrik.” That’s the name of the patented coating that allows the Nottage G-1 pool table to be a pool table. Made of toughened glass, the table’s surface with the Vitrik coating on it mimics the rolling resistance of felt, meaning that although it looks like you’re just playing on glass, the balls behave as though they’re on a regular felt surface with slate underneath. The rest of the table looks slick but is built entirely to competition specs, with the possible exception of a rather creative ball return system.

The G-1 pool table is also available with a frosted top that can be lit from below to make the entire surface softly glow. The base price of the table is about $25,000 which, while it seems like a lot, is apparently not too terribly expensive compared to other high quality pool tables. Duke Nukem Forever Footage Surfaces

This post is syndicated with permission from GamerFront.net

We all know that Duke Nukem Forever developer 3D Realms shut down last week, but what exactly were they working on? Many people (myself included) have wondered if they’ve just really been screwing around these last dozen years. However, evidence has surfaced that proves to the contrary.

The video doesn’t actually look half bad. If it were finished, it might be something that I’d check out. Certainly not what I would expect from 12 years of development, but worth a look. Something tells me that this isn’t the last we’ll see of in-game Duke footage.

NorhTec Gecko Edubook Costs $200, Runs On AA Batts

By Evan Ackerman

We’re big big fans of rechargeable batteries, but they’re not usually something that you think of powering devices that suck up a lot of electricity over a long period of time. Something like, oh, I don’t know, a laptop. But it looks like netbooks are just barely low power enough to achieve a decent amount of on-time using a bunch of rechargeable AA batteries, and NorhTec has taken the first step with their Gecko Edubook, which uses eight integrated NiMH batteries for power. More info and specs, after the jump. Read the rest of this entry »

This isn’t some weird Photoshop filter, it’s a picture taken with a digital camera that’s been modified to capture in the infrared part of the spectrum. Cool, right? Try this Google Image search for more examples of infrared pics.

Get Your Own Giant Inflatable Iceberg

iceberg-thumb-450x337jpg

By Chris Scott Barr

Every time I go swimming somewhere, I think to myself “wouldn’t this be more fun if I were just climbing out of the water, instead of swimming?” I mean, what’s the fun in swimming if you’re actually in the water most of the time? I’m totally not being sarcastic in the least. That’s why I have to get one of these Floating Iceberg Climbing Walls.

Rock climbing walls are fun on land, so why not drop $5400 on getting one for the water? Sure, you have to worry less about falling and breaking your neck in the water, but aren’t there enough fun things to do while swimming? To paraphrase a young jedi in training “I could almost buy my own boat for that!” I do see two rather fun uses for this. One involves scaring the hell out of people boating in the middle of the night. The other would be sneaking over to someone’s house and inflating this sucker in someone’s pool.

SlingPlayer Finally Available On The iPhone

slingplayer-iphone

By Chris Scott Barr

Despite my love for my iPhone, I still don’t get the fascination with watching video on it. It’s a beautiful screen, but any way you slice it, it’s still really small. I don’t mind playing a game on it for a short while, but it doesn’t take too long before I get tired of staring at it. However, for those that absolutely need to keep up on their favorite shows while they’re sitting at the BMV, then you’ll be happy to know that the SlingPlayer App for your iPhone is now available.

The App will stream your favorite shows to your iPhone, with one small catch. You’re going to have to be hooked up to a WiFi connection, as AT&T would not allow the service to run on 3G. Naturally they cited bandwidth concerns, despite having no issues with their own mobile TV services or YouTube. So how much is this exciting service going to cost you? A cool $30, plus you’ll actually need a Slingbox to work in conjunction with it.  I think that I’ll survive with just my laptop watching Hulu, thank you very much.

viewsonic-sbBy Shane McGlaun

Despite the fact that the global economy is very bad, smartphones are still growing at a significant rate. More and more computer companies are announcing that they are entering the smartphone market in an effort to improve their profits.

The latest company to announce that they are entering into the smartphone market isn’t a computer maker, but a company known for LCD TVs, digital picture frames, and PC monitors. Viewsonic has announced that it intends to enter into the smartphone market with phones aimed at video, gaming, and Internet browsing with larger screens.

By Shane McGlaun

If you have never played Spore on the PC or Wii you are missing one of the coolest video games of all time. The original Spore lets players build their own creature and evolve it by adding new parts from a single cell organism to a creature, then to a space faring race.

EA has announced that two new Spore titles are coming to the Nintendo platforms this fall. The Wii will get Spore Hero and the DS will get Spore Hero Arena. Spore Hero lets players create their own hero with over 250 parts and unique abilities. Players complete puzzles and missions to save their planet as they upgrade their character.

D-Link Adds CAPTCHA Security System To Many Of Its Routers

D-Link DIR-655 (Image courtesy D-Link)
By Andrew Liszewski

The effectiveness of the CAPTCHA (Completely Automated Public Turing Test to Tell Computers and Humans Apart) security system is still being debated. It’s far from bulletproof, but at the least it provides one more stumbling block to someone or something trying to compromise a website’s security. So D-Link has now added an integrated CAPTCHA system to some of its more popular routers including the DIR-615, DIR-625, DIR-628, DIR-655, DIR-825, DIR-855, DIR-685, and DGL-4500. The company is hoping the added level of security will reduce the number of incidents where routers have been used to compromise a home or small office network.

And if you’re currently using any of the aforementioned D-Link routers you’ll actually be able to download and install a firmware update from support.dlink.com that adds the CAPTCHA security functionality .
