Concepts Reveal What Girls Actually Want In A Laptop

hp_make_up

By Evan Ackerman

Who really cares about a laptop with a bigger screen or more horsepower or an SSD or 4G or WiMax when you could have a laptop with an integrated make up kit and nail printer and a screen that turns into a mirror at the push of a button? Because that’s what girls want, right? Right? Hmm, maybe we need a female writer on staff or something, because I suddenly feel like I’ve dug myself into a pretty deep hole here. Just keep in mind that these HP laptop concepts were designed by a guy in Russia named Nikita Buyanov and not me… A couple more, after the jump. Read the rest of this entry »

Bed Bunker Is Perfect For Post-Apocalyptic Planning

By Chris Scott Barr

Remember that little chat we had yesterday about robots and zombies taking over the world? Well I’m still convinced that it will happen one day (sooner, rather than later) and take my preparations for the uprising very seriously. One thing that is an absolute must-have in every household is a large safe for storing gratuitous amounts of armaments. Sure, you could go with one of those little stand-up lockers, but those can only hold so much, and are a little to obvious. You need to go with something a little bigger, while still well-hidden. You need the Bed Bunker.

This big-ass safe is perfect for holding guns, ammo, explosives and even a sword or two (those never run out of ammo). It’s fireproof, which means that if there are any documents that you think might still have value after the robot/zombie uprising has settled, you can keep them safe as well. All you need to do is pick the bed safe that fits your size needs and shell out between $2700 and $5200. Oh, and you’ll need to stock up on things to fill it with.

Man Gets DUI While Driving Away On His Barstool

0331-barstool-cletus

By Chris Scott Barr

Let’s say that you’ve had a rough day and you go out to the bar and get, well, for lack of a better word shit-faced. Now you don’t exactly have someone at home that can come pick you up, so what do you do? Cabs cost money and you don’t have any friends, so it’s a good thing that you hooked up a motor and some wheels to your barstool. Hell, now you don’t even have to get off your ass to go home. Just have someone get the door and the open road is all yours.

Yes I do have a rather active imagination, but these events actually happened. Some guy over in Ohio did these very things, and ended up wrecking his precious barstool. This caused the police to get involved, which of course arrested him on DUI charges. The man gave the officer a couple of interesting details before issuing his “Not Guilty” plea. First, the stool has a top speed of 38mph, which isn’t bad for a bar stool. He then informed the officer that he had drank 15 beers before speeding off on his power stool. “Not Guilty” indeed.

Mazda RX-8 Controlled Via iPod Touch

Jonathan Oxer’s RX-8 is equipped with a 3G connection running on a tiny little Ubuntu Linux system that’s always on. Besides turning the car into a 24×7 internet hotspot, it gives Jon the ability to access the car’s systems from anywhere in the world, and using an iPod touch he can turn the car on and off, lock and unlock it, and even pop the trunk. The browser based interface also gives Jon the ability to monitor engine telemetry, and even shows the position of the car on Google Maps.

As if that wasn’t enough, the car has an RFID reader mounted in the back right window, so when Jon walks up to the car, it reads an RFID tag implanted in his arm and then unlocks the door and starts the engine. This means that he doesn’t have to worry about someone stealing his keys, but he does have to worry about someone stealing his arm, which is just the sort of thing that keeps me up at night.
