OhGizmo, By An Artist Friend Of Mine

By David Ponce

The above image is a creation of a street artist friend of mine (click image for higher-res version). It was made entirely by hand, with pencils (remember those?) and felt tip pens. The only digital manipulation was in removing the paper creases that were visible after the scanning process. In case you can’t read it, it’s “OhGizmo”. Each letter is doubled. If you still can’t read it, well, we’re sorry.

After he gave this to me, I told him I’d show it to our readers. So here it is. What do y’all think?

By the way, if any of you are looking for something like this, he can be hired. And his rates are more than reasonable. Just use the contact form, and I’ll get you in touch.

Are you serious? Who would by indecipherable scribbles like that?

  • David Ponce

Many people, actually. I understand you don't like it, but believe me there's a pretty decent market for this stuff. You find it indecipherable, but it really isn't. I guess it's like Tokyoflash watches… they're hard to read, but it can be done, and they're selling like hotcakes.

  • Nick

I think its'pretty good actually, and you dont have to be a genius to be able to read it.

It's sort of like the opposite of the hidden secret pictures, where on those pictures, you have to stare at it for minutes and minutes, and BAM, the picture sort of comes at you.

On this one, you should take a quick 0.25 second glance, and go with what you think you saw.

I like it as art. Don't have a need for any graphic design myself, either personally or professionally, but I do appreciate the art.

Most people, when they say, “What do y'all think?” — DON'T really want to know what others think.

Anyway, I think it looks like it belongs underneath a railroad trestle somewhere in Omaha.

  • David Ponce

No, I actually really do want to know. I'm aware that lots of people will hate, but I'm sure others will love. I've already received a few requests for more info.

    David,

It's pretty obscure and difficult to read/understand. I think the last O ion Gizmo looks like an A any way you look at it.

If I didn't know it was supposed to say Oh Gizmo I wouldn't be able to figure out what the heck it spelled out.

I think Tokyo Flash designs suck by the way, just so you know where your audience is coming from…

Good, not anything I haven't seen on the side of trains and fences though unfortunetly, and also, while he has a natural talent with pencils and pens, that really doesn't mean much in this day and age of Photoshop, sad but true. Unless you are a painter or some other kind of non reproduceable art. As far as logo making and design like this, your buddy better get a firm grasp of a computer because while hand drawn logos possess their own charm, it's not practical in the business world. What will take your friend hours to do will take an 18 year old minutes. Again kudos for the old school hand done stuff, but if your trying to sell yourself (which he apparently is) get Photoshop.
