Sony Hana Akari Lamps Are Solar Powered, Don’t Look Like It

By Evan Ackerman

These prototype LED lamps from Sony use panels of dye-sensitized solar cells to power their LEDs. The dye-sensitized cells are cheaper than conventional solar cells, and they can also be dyed in different colors and shades. I imagine that there’s a tradeoff in efficiency, but it may not matter to just keep some LEDs burning, and besides, it looks pretty and makes you feel green inside.

No info on price or release date, but I’m hoping we’ll get another look at these at CES in January.
