The Volt’s Battery Pack Vs. The EV1′s

I’ve been following General Motors 100th anniversary celebration via the company’s GMblogs Twitter feed, and yesterday they linked to an interesting photo showing the size difference between the battery that will be used in the Chevy Volt, and the battery used in the EV1. Both of them have an energy capacity of 16kWhrs, but the Volt uses a lithium-ion battery that weighs in around 400 lbs while the EV1′s lead acid battery weighed in at 1,200 lbs. And while the Volt’s battery still isn’t small enough to be easily swapped out, I’d say in another 10 or 12 years (the EV1 was introduced in 1996) they should be roughly the size of an easy to carry briefcase.

And for the record, I really like the design of the final production version of the Volt. Sure the concept looked a lot slicker, but I think it’s important for this vehicle to attract a wide customer base, not just the bleeding edge early adopters. And the more conventional body design they’ve created will definitely make it appeal to more consumers.
