Mold Alert Not As Useful As You Would Think

Mold Alert (Image courtesy SkyMall)By Andrew Liszewski

Besides being a nuisance in the bread box or fridge certain types of mold can be quite dangerous if they start growing in other parts of your home. So I assumed the ‘Mold Alert’ from SkyMall could be used to detect the presence of these dangerous molds in your home and alert you to the problem but that doesn’t seem to be the case. In actuality the ‘Mold Alert’ uses a thermo-hygrometer to measure the relative humidity, room temperature and dew point in your home and will only alert you when the conditions are right for mold to grow.

So in reality the device will only tell you if mold could grow in your home and not if mold actually is growing in your home. And while the LCD display showing the humidity, dew point and temperature is handy I would probably just put the $99 I would have spent on this towards a dehumidifier which would actually help reduce mold growth.
