Save A Tree, Kill An Animal With Your Coffee

By Evan Ackerman

Couture Cup Sleeves

Cup Couture insulating cup sleeves are touted as “a stylish way to hug a tree every morning,” since they’re supposed to reduce paper waste by up to 10 pounds per year, assuming you don’t recycle the insulating cardboard sleeves that you normally get with your morning coffee. Wait a minute, aren’t those things usually made out of recycled cardboard anyway? Cup Couture cup sleeves come in eight styles, three of which are animal patterns. Two of those, tiger and giraffe, are endangered and conservation dependent species respectively. The third pattern is chinchilla fur, which is often farmed unethically. Sure, the designs are fake, but they’re encouraging the exploitation of animals, man! What kind of environmentally friendly message is that? Furthermore, I doubt that most people even want to replace their conventional insulating sleeves, lest the logo of their favorite global coffee chain not be broadcasting their bourgeois trendiness obviously enough.

$10 – $14 from Wishingfish.com. Oh, and I’m awarding myself +2 points for using the word “bourgeois” in a sentence that wasn’t part of a history exam.
