If you’ve always dreamed of becoming a great computer graphics artist but have no skills at modelling in 3DS Max or Maya there’s still hope for you. The ZScanner 700 from the ZCorporation is a handheld laser scanner that can easily convert any real-life object into a 3D model.

Just connect the device to your computer via its handy firewire connection, add some reflective targets to your object of choice and start scanning. The ZScan software will actually create a 3D polygon mesh of the object’s surface in real time so you can know what parts have been scanned and which haven’t.

I have to say I particularly like the fact that the company suggests ‘reverse engineering’ as a possible use for the device. Why go through all those years of designing and prototyping your own product when you can simply scan someone elses and apply your own label.

There is a downside though. The ZScanner and software will set you back a wallet-lightening $39,900.
