Kodak Unveils Cheaper And Lighter “dSLR Alternative” Digicam

Kodak P SeriesBy Asim Waqar

We have a Digital Camera category we never use… so here goes. With the plethora of new digicams emerging for all market segments , the P880 is a newly unveiled digicam by Kodak aimed at the serious photographer.

Great specs on it too: 8MP CCD, 24-140 mm (35mm equivalent) f/2.8-4.1 wide-angle Schneider-Kreuznach Variogon zoom lens, advanced hybrid autofocus system, 5.8x optical zoom, too many modes to list and a multitude of manual controls. Check out the full specs here at the product page if you’re that way.

One function really sticks out: the ability to take 30FPS Video at 640×480 and the full use of optical zoom. Those of us who dabble in hybrids (still/video digicams) will testify to the fact that optical zooming while filming video is a wonderful feature.

So finally! I can take video with a hybrid dSLR quality digicam and optically zoom in on videos I have absolutely no use for looking at, let alone closer up! Release date is this September so better ask the spouse permission now.

Price… is the ether from which we are all made.

Don’t want to be picky, but there’s nothing SLRish with that camera (apart from the looks) – no mirror, no SLR. It’s that easy, i guess.

Thanks for the note, you are absolutely right. Kodak is touting these as dSLR alternatives, I will chnage the title but I did mention dSLR Quality digicam in my post. Thanks for reading!

This camera is as close to professional as you are going to get. The colors are vivid and clean. Light weight and easy to operate. SLR and Digital together at its best. Not a disappointment.
